Flying With a Pet: What to Plan Before You Book

Air travel with a pet requires more planning than simply adding a carrier to your luggage. Airline rules, aircraft limitations, destination requirements and your pet's health can all affect whether a trip is practical.

Check the airline before booking

Policies vary by airline and route. Confirm whether your pet may travel in the cabin, carrier dimensions, weight limits, fees, breed restrictions and the number of pets permitted on a flight. Space for in-cabin pets may be limited even when seats are available.

Understand destination requirements

Domestic and international destinations can have different vaccination, certificate and entry rules. Requirements may change, so verify information with the airline and relevant government authorities rather than relying on old travel posts.

Choose the carrier early

Your pet should be able to rest comfortably in a carrier that meets the airline's current specifications. Introduce the carrier well before travel day using treats, bedding and short calm sessions.

Talk with your veterinarian

Ask whether flying is appropriate for your pet's age, health and individual needs. If documentation is required, schedule appointments early enough to meet the destination's timing rules.
